Bitter Sweet: Real Ale Macarons for Father’s Day

Real Ale macarons

We’ve created the perfect Father’s Day gift for dads who love their ale. We’ve made a macaron with an Adnams Broadside and dark chocolate ganache. It’ll be on sale all week in our shop. Head to Macarons & More in the Royal Arcade Norwich for these and other indulgent treats.

Choosing the Beer

The lighter coloured ales get their characteristic bitter and citrus flavours from the different varieties of hops that can be used in the brewing process. The darker malty ales pair particularly well with chocolate. After sampling many beers (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!) we settled on Adnams Broadside.

Southwold Ale

Broadside is brewed by the Suffolk drinks manufacturer Adnams. Their brewery and distillery is a major employer in the coastal town of Southwold. Broadside is one of their bestselling ales. The tasting notes on the Adnams website describe the beer:

“Brewed with Pale Ale and Chocolate malt and First Gold hops, Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit.”

Macarons & More founder, Tim Kinnaird, described the process of developing the perfect Father’s Day macaron:

“We worked out a method combining only beer and Belgian Dark Chocolate. We usually add cream and butter to ganache but that sort of masked the flavour. So it’s just beer and chocolate. That helped the subtleties of the beer flavour stand out much more. It’s remarkably delicious and the pairing of dark chocolate with it goes amazing well. Much more than the sum of its parts. I think that relates to the malty, full bodied, fruitiness of the beer.”
